How To Ensure Your First Dance Is Perfect

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Your wedding day will be full of special songs, among other things.  Walking down the aisle, first dance, or the farewell song at the end of the night, it’s your wedding so you get to choose the perfect song for you.

If you’re placing your trust in a DJ to provide these songs for you, be sure to double check they’re bring the right version.  Have them email a short sample to you, or send them the version you have just to be sure.  Similarly if you’re using an iPod and going DIY with the wedding music – make sure you have the right track.

For example, Lonestar released 2 prominent versions of their song AMAZED.  Same song, but each sounds quite different.  In fact one version is often mistakenly identified as “Tim McGraw”.

There are many other examples of songs with multiple logical versions.  It’s easy to check you have the right song, but  it’s impossible to have your first dance or walk down the aisle again.

Mistakes Happen.

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

I’m human, I’ve made mistakes, we all have.  It happens at any level in any profession.  However, I believe how you recover (not cover up) mistakes that is where experience really pays off.

This vid has been doing the rounds on YouTube quite a bit lately from somewhere in North America.  The DJ plays the wrong song as the first dance eventually, but there’s much more to it both before and after that little technical glitch.

The guy made a mistake, he should have fixed the mistake and moved on without using the microphone. Watch the entire thing for full effect.

First Dance Nerves? Here’s An Idea

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Imagine – you’re introduced, everybody is standing and applauding your entrance to the reception.  You both head straight for the dance floor as your entrance music transforms into your first dance song.

Sometimes my clients just want to get their first dance out of the way.  They may be nervous, or just plain excited because they’ve practised it so well.  Others want to make an entrance to their reception that just a bit different and unexpected.

Whatever their reason, I love this when it happens.  It’s just so different – I’ve only done this maybe 3 or 4 times in my 20+ years.  It also means the dance floor is “open” for guests later at their leisure instead of politely waiting for that first dance to take place, and even your most senior guests will see that dance no matter what time they retire for the evening.

Just an idea.

A creative first dance

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Jason and Lihsia spent hours practising this one.  Just over 2 minutes into their first song, a dance-off broke out.

Green Apple caught the entire thing on video below.

Another crazy first dance routine

It’s a bride and groom’s first dance at their wedding with a “Evolution of Dance” twist. There’s plenty of these around but this guy is giving it his all.

I’ve yet to see a couple attempt it here in New Zealand. Fingers crossed!

Looking for wedding DJs in Auckland? Visit my site!

The thing about your wedding is that it’s your wedding.  This means there is no right or wrong about any aspect – you can do things any way you like!  Isn’t that exciting?!??!

I’ve worked with couples who chose to drop the traditional first dance and replace it with something just as unique and romantic.  One couple considered the idea of not having a processional song at all (bride walking up the aisle at beginning of ceremony), instead arriving at the same time as the groom – but with a twist.  (more…)

Looking for wedding DJs in Auckland? Visit my site!

Auckland Zoo offers a number of options for a very creative and unique wedding reception.   I’ve been involved with ceremonies at the band rotunda, which have usually been followed by a reception down the path at the Old Elephant House.

Strangely when I mention this the Elephant House to people, a common response is (more…)

A Wedding reception with a unique first dance at Waitakere Estate, Auckland

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

When planning a wedding, learn to expect the unexpected. So many things can change and usually you can plan around it, make alternative arrangements and so on. One key ingredient though is the venue. Chris and Jenny found out almost by accident that their intended venue in Titirangi was no longer operating as a wedding reception venue.
