This might apply to any industry anywhere in the world. It may work at a used car yard, but should it apply everywhere else too?

How much?
Sunday, May 31st, 2009How long has your DJ been practising?
Monday, May 11th, 2009Ever noticed that even the most senior medical professionals still “practice medicine”. They generally read medical journals, attend training conferences and participate in all manners of continued education in order to stay up to date with the changing trends in their profession.
It’s something that all professionals should do yet very few DJs do.
Here’s a question to ask the professionals involved in your wedding – what was (more…)
Your Wedding Venue. Service provider, or just a room?
Wednesday, April 15th, 2009This is something I just can’t figure out. You hire a venue for your wedding, you pay them money, but what are they really providing you?
Do you expect your venue to know all the little details of your wedding day? Or is the role of a wedding venue simply that – a great looking location for you and your guests to enjoy?
As a wedding DJ that cares about the little things, it astounds me that so many venues or more to the point the venue staff simply see your wedding as another event, another job. While the majority of venues really do a great job of looking after their clients, there’s a few around Auckland and the rest of the country that almost act like your wedding is an inconvenience.
Listen for the red flags – perhaps staff using words like (more…)
Dunedin host to world’s first Improve-a-Groom
Tuesday, April 7th, 2009As part of The Wedding Show which expanded into Otago this year, the first ever Improve-a-Groom seminar was held.
A great group of guys participated and from all accounts took away some new ideas, direction, and support. I’m looking forward to seeing how this works with an Auckland audience at The Wedding Show at the Aotea Centre in Auckland, April 19.
Video from the Dunedin show coming soon, so for now view highlights below from The Wedding Show at Aotea Centre from September 2008.

Frame the wedding guest book
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009MC and entertainment for your wedding – DJ by Nick Logan
Guest books are nice to have at a wedding. If you’re going to use one, be sure to have your wedding MC remind guests through out the evening to sign. Often there’s a line at the start of the reception and some guests will skip it with every intention of doing it later, then forget.
Also, encourage your guests to contribute more than just their name. Words of wisdom, advice, or just a story or comment will be so much more memorable in 10 or 20 years.
I’ve seen some other great ideas used instead of the traditional wedding guest book.
- A photo book, like a reference type book with more photos than text. One couple had images of the world (a well travelled pair) and they had guests at the wedding from 11 different countries. Guests signed the photos, instead of writing on blank pages.
- An old fashioned photo album, complete with Polaroid instant photos. Take a pic, print the photo, then sign the page. Usually these albums use black pages, so be sure to have a pen that will show up on black – perhaps a silver or white ink pen.
- An artists canvas mounted on a frame. Supply a variety of pens (lot’s of colour) and you then have a guest book that is actually a work of art. You can hang and display this in your home. An alternative is to use paper, then talk to the photo/image outlets (the guys that used to develop your rolls of camera film) about transferring that to canvas. Alternatively, go to the experts at On2Canvas.
If you have another idea, please add it to the comments!
New Zealand Wedding in 2011?
Monday, January 19th, 2009In 2003 New Zealand played Australia in a rugby world cup semi final. I was working at a wedding that night, and the bride and groom had a venue with no TVs. Sadly a large contingency of guests made their way to a pub right next door to the Auckland wedding venue and watched the game (my audience diminished steadily as the game got closer to full time).
Rugby is a big game in New Zealand, especially when we’re playing Australia. It’s tough to compete with, and I know this couple expected more from their guests. We even discussed it beforehand, and they honestly believed the guests wouldn’t be so rude.
Of course, to make matters worse, New Zealand lost. To Australia. We were out of the cup. It’s pretty tough for any party to recover from something like that, as was the case this night.
If you’re planning a 2011 wedding and haven’t confirmed a date yet, it might pay to check the 2011 Rugby World Cup schedule. At the moment, the timetable is not confirmed, but the official 2011 Rugby World Cup website will have more information once available.

The Wedding Show 2009. Now with extra show and improved wedding flavour!
Friday, January 16th, 2009The Wedding Show is coming up again in April at Auckland’s Aotea Centre and – for the first time ever – Dunedin’s Edgar Centre.
Something really exciting that’s launching this year is the new Improve-a-Groom workshop seminars. I’ll be hosting these short sessions, and hopefully the grooms who join us will learn a trick or two, and perhaps even have a great idea they can share with others. By the end of it, the guys will have a clear list of ideas and suggestions that will help them be the groom they always wanted to be, but didn’t know how. Of course, they’ll be gently reminded about what not to do on the wedding day or during the build up to it.
It’s guaranteed to be a bit of fun and many guys may be surprised to learn that they’re not as unromantic as they thought.
More info at The Wedding Show website.
- Sunday April 5, 2009 – Edgar Centre Dunedin

A creative first dance
Tuesday, January 6th, 2009Jason and Lihsia spent hours practising this one. Just over 2 minutes into their first song, a dance-off broke out.
Green Apple caught the entire thing on video below.
Check out Green Apple or Project Shot for wedding video and photography services.
Another crazy first dance routine
Monday, November 3rd, 2008It’s a bride and groom’s first dance at their wedding with a “Evolution of Dance” twist. There’s plenty of these around but this guy is giving it his all.
I’ve yet to see a couple attempt it here in New Zealand. Fingers crossed!

First “Movember” Wedding
Sunday, November 2nd, 2008November is of course “Movember” month, where guys try to grow a moustache in the interest of raising funds for men’s health.
At Reston and Bianca’s wedding on November 1st, 2008 at Sorrentos, a bunch of guests couldn’t grow their mo’s fast enough. From a distance, charcoal works just fine.
