First “Movember” Wedding

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

November is of course “Movember” month, where guys try to grow a moustache in the interest of raising funds for men’s health.

At Reston and Bianca’s wedding on November 1st, 2008 at Sorrentos, a bunch of guests couldn’t grow their mo’s fast enough. From a distance, charcoal works just fine.

They kept asking if I had any "porn music"...????

Is it a wedding reception? Or just dinner….?

Friday, October 24th, 2008

I came across this quote from a fellow wedding DJ based in Indianapolis, USA and it really says a lot.

“If your guests leave right after they eat, that’s not a wedding celebration; you’ve just paid for a very expensive dinner party.” (Jim Cerone).

All DJs are the same, right?

Friday, October 24th, 2008

I guess many are. And at the end of the day, really all we do as “DJs” is play music. That in itself is quite simple, in fact in all seriousness, monkeys can do it with a little training.

So what sets one DJ apart from the next? When it comes to your wedding it really depends what you really want. I think I’ll present more detailed and though provoking information here soon, but for now let me say this: if all you’re looking for is someone who will play the right music and read the crowd, you’ll find that DJ. There’s plenty of reliable, fun DJs who pay cool music from 8 til 12.

But if you feel like there could be more to it, read on.

What if your DJ knew there was more to a wedding than just music? For example (more…)

Need a DJ for your wedding?  Get in touch!

This is all over the net and so far nobody has been able to prove it’s fake, but many industry experts suggest it’s just too good to be real.

Take a look at the video the whole world is watching then read why some parts just don’t make sense…

Now, you may want to watch it again and consider the following points made by my friend and colleague DJ Greg Tish of GT Entertainment, Tallahassee (USA):

  1. The Bride has no flowers and the MOH has one set of flowers, she has a bouquet and the bride doesn’t? The bride hands the bouquet to the MOH of honor when the rings are exchanged.
  2. The B/G are not holding hands which leaves enough room for the staged fall.
  3. The video is set right in the middle of the aisle, the photographer would never let that happen and a real professional wouldn’t set up there.

I’m guessing time will tell for sure but it’s just so difficult to know if this is fake or not.  If it’s staged, it’s certainly done very well.  Peter Jackson or Spielberg should track this guy down!

I love a good show

The Wedding Show is on again at Auckland’s Aotea Centre.

Here’s the TV ad due to start in a few weeks.

Wedding ceremony music – a basic guide

Looking for wedding DJs in Auckland? Visit my site!

The thing about your wedding is that it’s your wedding.  This means there is no right or wrong about any aspect – you can do things any way you like!  Isn’t that exciting?!??!

I’ve worked with couples who chose to drop the traditional first dance and replace it with something just as unique and romantic.  One couple considered the idea of not having a processional song at all (bride walking up the aisle at beginning of ceremony), instead arriving at the same time as the groom – but with a twist.  (more…)

Keeping up with the Joneses

Over the last 8 years or so, I’ve really “kept up with the Joneses” – the entire family. Before Natalie Jones was even engaged, I was the DJ at her 21st, her older brother’s wedding, her younger brother’s 21st in Auckland, and her mother’s 50th birthday.

And then – Rob and Natalie got married. The ceremony was held at St Mark’s Church in Remuera. I’m pretty sure that church is used on a current TSB Bank TV commercial too… (more…)

Old Elephant House at Auckland Zoo – it doesn’t smell :)

Auckland Zoo offers a number of options for a very creative and unique wedding reception.   I’ve been involved with ceremonies at the band rotunda, which have usually been followed by a reception down the path at the Old Elephant House.

Strangely when I mention this the Elephant House to people, a common response is (more…)

A wedding day promise that simply “blew away”.

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

At Tara and Morgan’s wedding at Castaways in September 2006, they asked the guests to make a promise and throw it away.

Tara had her heart set on a cliff side ceremony at Castaways in Waiuku. Thankfully Morgan braved the odds and made the final call, and despite what felt like gale force winds and darkening skies threatening to dump torrential rain, Tara got her wish. While it wasn’t exceptionally cold, the wind was so fierce that even the bridesmaids and grooms men closest to the action could not hear the vows. Shortly afterwards, Morgan and Tara said that they both each heard each other, and that was all that mattered. However, I worked in a surprise for the guests later that evening. (more…)

Looking for wedding DJs in Auckland? Visit my site!

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had maybe a dozen emails or calls for various November dates, all of them Saturdays. I’ve been booked for some of those nights for the best part of a year.

It doesn’t matter if you need a DJ, a band, a venue, a photographer – once you find the right one, book them then relax. November and December usually sees DJs and venues booked solid with end of year corporate celebrations, and of course January through April are exceptionally busy months being considered “peak wedding season”. From a biased point of view, the DJ or band are often one of the last considerations (photographer, venue, celebrant, even cars often booked before entertainment).

Once you come across something or someone you like the look of, book it, make it happen, and then finalise the little details closer to the time. The only downside might be the “what if they go out of business?” question, so deal with reputable operators with plenty of positive history whenever possible. Unfortunately there really is no way to STOP someone going out of business though (just look at the finance companies of late!).

On the positive side, the more professionals you have booked, the more “experts” you have available to call on for tips and advice.

It’s never too early to plan ahead!
