How to find a great DJ

Monday, November 7th, 2011

There are plenty of websites and blogs that go over the same information intended to help brides ask the right questions when hiring a DJ.  However, I have a few points that don’t seem to be promoted often.

1.  Talk to the venue
Talk to the staff, the management.  See who they recommend, but ask them WHY they recommend that DJ.  What stands out?  Is it just because they have a business card?  Or have they seen that DJ on a number of occasions?

Also, don’t be afraid to ask if the venue has any kind of “kick back” for giving out names.  It’s possible the DJ pays a cut to the venue for every event.  Ask the DJ if they “pay to play”.  You can apply the same logic to photographers or celebrants etc that may recommend a particular DJ.

2.  Talk to other brides.
This might seem obvious – talking to couples who have already gotten married and used a DJ.  But take it a step further and ask why they chose the DJ they ended up with.  Also, ask if they met with other DJs, and why they didn’t choose them.

3.  Talk to other wedding guests
Know anyone that’s been to a wedding in the last few months or know someone who’s going to one soon?  They can be your best source for info and recommendations.  While the bride’s opinion is valuable, a bride and groom are generally quite distracted all day.  They may not see all of the little things a DJ does – be they good or bad things.  Guests often see or experience things going on that the bride is understandably too busy to notice.

I hope this helps!

Questions for a wedding DJ

How long has your DJ been practising?

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Ever noticed that even the most senior medical professionals still “practice medicine”. They generally read medical journals, attend training conferences and participate in all manners of continued education in order to stay up to date with the changing trends in their profession.

It’s something that all professionals should do yet very few DJs do.

Here’s a question to ask the professionals involved in your wedding – what was (more…)

Your Wedding Venue. Service provider, or just a room?

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

This is something I just can’t figure out. You hire a venue for your wedding, you pay them money, but what are they really providing you?

Do you expect your venue to know all the little details of your wedding day? Or is the role of a wedding venue simply that – a great looking location for you and your guests to enjoy?

As a wedding DJ that cares about the little things, it astounds me that so many venues or more to the point the venue staff simply see your wedding as another event, another job. While the majority of venues really do a great job of looking after their clients, there’s a few around Auckland and the rest of the country that almost act like your wedding is an inconvenience.

Listen for the red flags – perhaps staff using words like (more…)

Another crazy first dance routine

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

It’s a bride and groom’s first dance at their wedding with a “Evolution of Dance” twist. There’s plenty of these around but this guy is giving it his all.

I’ve yet to see a couple attempt it here in New Zealand. Fingers crossed!

Old Elephant House at Auckland Zoo – it doesn’t smell :)

Looking for wedding DJs in Auckland? Visit my site!

Auckland Zoo offers a number of options for a very creative and unique wedding reception.   I’ve been involved with ceremonies at the band rotunda, which have usually been followed by a reception down the path at the Old Elephant House.

Strangely when I mention this the Elephant House to people, a common response is (more…)

A wedding day promise that simply “blew away”.

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

At Tara and Morgan’s wedding at Castaways in September 2006, they asked the guests to make a promise and throw it away.

Tara had her heart set on a cliff side ceremony at Castaways in Waiuku. Thankfully Morgan braved the odds and made the final call, and despite what felt like gale force winds and darkening skies threatening to dump torrential rain, Tara got her wish. While it wasn’t exceptionally cold, the wind was so fierce that even the bridesmaids and grooms men closest to the action could not hear the vows. Shortly afterwards, Morgan and Tara said that they both each heard each other, and that was all that mattered. However, I worked in a surprise for the guests later that evening. (more…)
